Protect Korean Squirrels

Squirrels belong to a large family of small rodents. There are many types of squirrels such as tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, woodchucks, flying squirrels, and prairie dogs. Korea just has small tree squirrels. Sometimes they move on the ground, but they usually move on the trees; in addition, they usually eat acorns. Before coming winter, they save enough acorns because when they wake up after winter, the ground has no food. Squirrels are hard workers, so sometimes hard workers are called squirrels. And also, they look like cute which is the reason why many Korean like squirrels. When I was an elementary school student, I often saw the squirrels in my hometown. Some mountain climbers threw some food toward squirrels when they climbed a mountain. The image of squirrels is really friendly in Korea. And also, squirrels are very important to the food chain. According to Julian Barbara in “Defense of Squirrels”, “They spread seeds, nuts, and acorns, thereby symbiotically aiding the survival and extending the range of oaks and numerous other trees in both the urban and wild forest”(12). Squirrels are really helpful as well as friendly, so Korea needs squirrels. However, few years ago, many Eurasian red squirrels which are bigger and darker than Korean squirrels came to Korea from Japan. People thought red squirrels are cute, too. However, when red squirrels came to Korea, the number of Korean squirrels decreased. We couldn’t see Korean squirrels well because red squirrels fed on Korean squirrels; in addition, red squirrels aren’t helpful in nature; therefore, the government began to protect Korean squirrels. Nowadays, because of many other invasive species such as red squirrels, our food chain is changed differently. We need to protect our species such as Korean squirrels for normal food chain.
