The South China Tiger

The South China tiger, also called the Chinese, Amoy, or Xiamen tiger, inhabits the forests in the south of China. It is referred to as one of the 10 most endangered animals in the world. The experts warn that the South China tiger might become extinct in the next 10 years because there are fewer than 20 of these tigers left in the wild. The South China tiger having a round head with short ears. It has powerful limbs though it is one of the smaller tiger in the world, “Male tigers measure about 2.6 m (8 ft) from head to tail and weigh about 150 kg (330 lb). Female tigers are smaller, measuring about 2.3 m (7 1/2 ft) long. They weigh approximately 110 kg (240 lbs)” (The South China Tiger, 2010). The South China tiger, similar to all other subspecies of tigers, are carnivores. They live in thick jungles, and they also like to play in water. The South China tiger was plentiful in the south of China's temperate upland forests in the past. However, because the farmers and villagers were attacked by the tigers, they were considered pests like leopards, wolves, and “enemies of the people” (The South China Tiger, 2010). In 1959, Chinese government encouraged the citizens to kill the tigers to protect people; as a result, the population of the South China tiger decreased from more than 4,000 to less than 200 in 1982. When the government realized that it is a rare animal, they forbad the killing of the South China tiger, but this seemed to be too late. In 1990, China’s State Forestry Administration made every effort to save the tiger, and they established the special Nature reserves for those that lived in the wild. Eventually, I wish everyone can protect the rare animals like the South China tiger and hope the Chinese government can finds the ways to train the tigers to regain their hunting instincts and survive on their own.

  1. Reducing wild animals is really sad and bad to our food chain and sometimes life. Nowadays, Korea doesn't have many species of wild animals. We can watch wild animals just in the zoo. I think that is not wild animals. Now Korean government try to protect wild animals. We need to protect wild animals to retain our chain and the world~
